Languages

The learning of a language supports both the social and cognitive development of our students. Studying another language encourages greater tolerance, understanding and appreciation of those from different cultural backgrounds and promotes the ability to adapt to future foreign language learning.

We currently offer French at Weeden Heights Primary School.  All students from Prep to Year 6 are given the opportunity to gain an understanding of the language and culture.   The Language program at Weeden Heights Primary School promotes awareness and understanding of the nature and purpose of language, and will often improve the student’s use of English .

In this subject, the focus is on oral communication and language development. Students develop an understanding of the similarities and differences between English and French Teaching and learning strategies capitalise on students’ natural curiosity about the world, enthusiasm for learning and communicating with others, and on developing keen receptive skills. In accordance with AusVELS, the Language program makes appropriate links to other subject areas.  ICT skills are embedded within the program. The Languages program aims to be meaningful, relevant and enjoyable while responding to the needs of the students.

Students in Years 5 and 6 are given the opportunity to further to develop both their written and oral skills and cultural knowledge through our links with schools in France and New Caledonia.
